Policy and Permitting

Policy and permitting allow a consistent approach by the state and its partners to manage and govern the MPA network. The work of the Leadership Team has focused on improving existing communication and collaboration among state agencies regarding permitting and regulation issues associated with MPAs.

Researchers collect bull kelp blades. Scientific collecting permits, issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, are required for collecting anything for research purposes in and around MPAs.
