Call for Tribal Representatives on the Marine Protected Area Statewide Leadership Team – Nominations close January 13, 2026
The Marine Protected Area Statewide Leadership Team (MSLT) is seeking nominations for tribal representatives to serve on this important advisory body that supports the management of California’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) network. The MSLT promotes collaboration among agencies, organizations, and tribes with roles in ocean stewardship and informs regulatory bodies, such as the California Fish and Game Commission.
The MSLT includes one primary and one alternate tribal representative for each of four coastal regions: North Coast, North Central Coast, Central Coast, and South Coast.
The MSLT is accepting nominations to fill all eight tribal representative seats (Primary and Alternate for each region). Representatives from all California Native American tribes—regardless of federal recognition status—are encouraged to apply.
Tribal Representatives serve three-year terms and play a key leadership role in advancing the goals of the MPA management program, including outreach, enforcement, research, and policy. Representatives are expected to promote fair and equal representation for all tribes in their region, uphold tribal sovereignty, and commit to regular participation in MSLT activities. The role includes attending 3–4 meetings annually (mostly virtual) and participating in communications and work plan implementation. Representatives will be reimbursed for time and travel.
Interested applicants must complete the nomination form and submit a supporting letter or resolution from a tribal official.
Applications are due by Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
More information and contact details are included in the nomination packet.
