California Ocean Day and Film Screening of Sequoias of the Sea

California’s coast and ocean face complex challenges—but there’s powerful momentum behind efforts to protect them. Explore two upcoming events that bring people together to learn, connect, and take action.

California Ocean Day

Led by environmental non-profits and now in its 20th year, California Ocean Day on May 6 brings together ocean enthusiasts, community leaders, and policy-minded individuals who care about the coast and ocean for a full day of advocacy, learning, and connection in Sacramento.

Whether you’re new to ocean issues or a long-time advocate, the day offers opportunities to:

  • Meet with state leaders and legislative staff
  • Attend educational panels on current coastal and ocean issues
  • Connect and network at lunch and evening receptions

This event is open to the public. Registration is required.

Date: Tuesday, May 6, 2025

For the day’s agenda, locations, times, and registration, visit the California Ocean Day website.

Film Screening of Sequoias of the Sea

Leading up to California Ocean Day, OPC and California Natural Resources Agency will host a free film screening of Sequoias of the Sea at the California Natural Resources Agency building on May 5. Sequoias is a new, award-winning documentary that tells the story of the environmental, cultural, and economic destruction impacting a Northern California coastal town that has lost its kelp forests.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on kelp protection and restoration in California, featuring agency partners, scientists, fishermen, and tribal members.

Time: 4:00 p.m.  –  5:45 p.m.
